Richard Dennis Bernier, Sr.

Chief Warrant Officer, Richard Dennis Bernier, Sr., 81, of Hagerstown, died, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at his home. Born at home January 29, 1933 in Danielson, Ct., he was the son of the late Peter and Jeanette (Belanger) Bernier. In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Robert Bernier. CWO Bernier began his military career in 1950 at age 17. He served with Company C169 Infantry 43rd Infantry Division in Germany during the occupation, 17th Infantry 7th Division in Korea, 3rd Armored Division in Germany and the 5th Maintenance Battalion, Central Highlands, Vietnam. He was also stationed at various stateside military post. He was a Korean and Vietnam combat veteran. He retired after 23 years of service as a communication electronic warrant at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He received four campaign stars, seventeen military and foreign medals including the bronze star medal. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, R.S. Tagg Chapter #14 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936. He also retired from the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. in 1995 as a biomedical engineering technician. Survivors include three sons, Richard, Jr. of Hambleton, W.Va., Peter and his wife Julia of Southern California and Robert and his wife, Maureen of Iamsville, Md.; two daughters, Debra Ann Davis and her husband, Michael of Greenville, S.C. and Pamela Ricker and her husband, Michael of Hagerstown; one sister, Darlene Foley of Sarasota, Fla., and ten grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 28, 201 at 1:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Deacon Gary Fulmer officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to services. Interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to the Humane Society of Washington County 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
