Richard Eugene Fouke

October 24, 1930 — July 6, 2012

Richard Eugene Fouke Sr., 81, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, July 6, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.

Richard was born Oct. 24, 1930, in Hagerstown, and was the son of the late Charles Preston Fouke Sr. and Mae Biggs (Davis) Fouke.

Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and during his service received a certificate for his donation to the completion of the Iwo Jima Memorial.

He retired from Consolidated Rail Corp. (CONRAIL) and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown; Morris Frock American Legion Post 42; and Hagerstown VFW Post 1936. Richard volunteered at the REACH cold-weather shelter, and was a dedicated supporter of the American Cancer Society, as well as Relay for Life.

Richard enjoyed life and believed in living it to the fullest. He loved a good project, where he could build and tinker with things. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the stocks and going to Charles Town Races. He especially enjoyed making buckeyes and apple dumplings every fall to support fundraising efforts, which satisfied his love for baking. He will be remembered by all who had the pleasure to meet him as a compassionate and loyal friend with a great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley I. (Herbaugh) Fouke, who passed away in 2004.

Surviving him is his son, Richard E. Fouke II and wife, Tammy, of Brunswick, Md.; two brothers, Nevin Fouke and John Fouke, both of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Virginia Harman; and a brother, Charles Preston Fouke Jr.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, at The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, 20 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Kyle Powderly officiating. Inurnment will be private, held in Rest Haven Cemetery.
