Robert Gustave Hamond

Robert Gustave "Bob" Hammond, 85, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Coffman Nursing Home.

Born June 27, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Robert Bentley and Hedwig L. (Muench) Hammond.

Waynesboro (Waynesboro, Virginia) He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the LST 717 as a seaman fireman first class.

Bob retired from C&P Telephone Co. as a lineman/repairman with 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Pioneers and CWA (Communication Workers Association), and received the George Meany Award.

He was a member of Christ Reformed Church and First Christian Church, where he was a Sunday school leader.

He was a Boy Scout leader for 49 years for Cub Scout Pack and Troop 66, where he received the Silver Beaver Award.

He was involved in youth baseball, umpiring Little League for 16 years.

He was a member of BPO Elks 378, where he served as chairman of the grounds committee for many years. He also volunteered at elementary schools for reading programs, and was a member of the Izaak Walton gun club, Travel Club, Long Meadow Bowling League, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; and was a volunteer and past president of First Hose Fire Co.

He is survived by a daughter, Carol LuAnn Hammond of Hagerstown; a son, Lawrence R. Hammond and wife, Cathy, of Hagerstown; two grandchildren, Harrison and Allison Hammond; sister-in-law, Dorothy K. Hammond, with a niece and nephew; half sister, Roberta Smith; and close cousins from Germany, Ute and Andi Scharf and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Jo Ann Fisher (Smith) Hammond; and a brother, Walter L. Hammond.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.

Graveside services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
