Robert Percy Neisser

Robert Percy â??Bobâ? Neisser Jr., of Maugansville, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home.

Born Dec. 10, 1933, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Robert P. Neisser Sr. and Anna R. (Smith) Neisser.

He attended both Frederick High School and Hagerstown High School with the class of 1953, and graduated with a GED.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1954 to 1958.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, L. Virginia (Tabler) Neisser; his sister, Patricia A. (Neisser) Neigh of Young Harris, Ga.; four children, Steven W. Neisser of Miami, Lori A. (Neisser) Barton and her husband, Donald, of Hagerstown, Md., Kerri L. (Neisser) Carbaugh of Williamsport, and Bradley S. Neisser and his wife, Beth A. (Stockslager), of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Philip A. Martin; his aunt, Katherine E. (Smith) Zumbrun; his sister, Barbara A. Neisser; his son, Robert W. Neisser; his grandson, Jason Neisser; and his ex-wife Mary Lou (Wyand)(Neisser) Showe.

Born in Frederick, Bob and his family moved to Hagerstown when he was 16. After high school, Bob served in the U.S. Air Force, graduating with top honors at jet mechanic training school at Amarillo Air Force Base. He served as a jet mechanic on the B-47 Stratojet medium bomber. He served overseas in North Africa and Turkey. After the service, Bob worked at and often managed several gas stations and garages in the Hagerstown area until 1965, when he went to work at Mack Trucks, where he worked as a machinist for 25 years before retiring. He worked part time for Interstate Battery (12 years) and Designer Sunglasses (16 years) until 2010.

Bob was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hagerstown, and was a member and past president of the Christian Heirs Sunday school class. He was the co-chairman of the deacons, a deacon, and also a member of the property committee. He served as past president of the Christian menâ??s group. He also served on the education and worship committees, and changed the church sign every week since 1996. He volunteered numerous weekends a year at the Christian Church Capital Areaâ??s camp and conference facility in Bethany Beach, Del., assisting in maintenance and renovation projects.

He was a past member of Maugansville Ruritan Club and a charter member of Maugansville Little League, where he served as head umpire. He was a member of UAW Local 171. He was a member of the North High â??Hubâ? Band Boosters from 1990 to 1994, where he volunteered to maintain, clean and repair the bandâ??s seat cover system for school football games, and also performed maintenance to the bandâ??s golf cart. He attended many of the bandâ??s competitions, and traveled with the band when it performed in the Macyâ??s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1991, and in the New Orleans Heritage Festival in 1993.

Most of all, Bobâ??s true passion was spending time with his grandchildren, and motorcycle riding.

He was a 16-year prostate cancer survivor.

Friends will be received Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, by the Rev. Steven Johns-Boehme.
