Russell Ray "Bub" Smoot, 90, of Sharpsburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Golden Living Center.
Born May 12, 1922 in Slainesville, WV, he was the son of the late Ray and Hilda (Rowzee) Smoot
Russell worked as a cabinet maker for 41 1/2 years at Statton Furniture Co., retiring in 1989.
He was a corporal in the US Army, during WWII, 41st Company A, Tank Division, 11th Armour Thunderbolts. He served in Europe and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge.
Russell is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Viola C. (Shanholtz) Smoot; four children, Alan Smoot and wife Debbie of Falling Waters, WV., Brenda Hose and husband Floyd of Hedgesville, WV., Darlene Chaney and husband John of Hagerstown, and Susan Bowman and special friend Bo Fox of Greencastle, PA.; a brother, Glen Smoot of Williamsport; two sisters, Ruby Hott of Monrovia, Violet Hott of Sharpsburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Smoot; three sisters, Betty Wright, Helen Martin, and Flo House.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Pastor Kevin Smoot officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
