Samuel Benjamin Carpenter

July 3, 1926 — December 28, 2014

Samuel Benjamin Carpenter, lovingly known as "Pappy Sam, Produce Man", passed away at age 88, in the comfort of his home, on Sunday, December 28, 2014.

Born July 3, 1926 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clinton Feather and Alice (Metz) Carpenter.

He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II, where he received a State of MD Certificate of Appreciation for services rendered; a Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and a American Theater Victory Metal.

Samuel worked as an apprentice machinist for the Western Maryland Railroad from 1943 to 1944. He went on to retire from Fairchild Industries as a machinist after 15 years of service in 1989. He received a service recognition award for his great work ethic. Samuel earned his nickname by buying, selling and donating produce to people and business's all over Hagerstown.

He was a member of Calvary Temple Church in Williamsport, as well as Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42.

Samuel is survived by four daughters, Rita D. Robinson, Marie C. Leonard, Norma J. Kirsch, Linda K. Yost; two sons, Sammy L. Carpenter, Timmy W. Carpenter; a brother, George Carpenter; numerous grandchildren; step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca May Carpenter; a sister, Martha Carter; and two brothers, Melvin and Earl Carpenter.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 3, 2015 in Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with pastor Robert Robinson officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the graveside service in Rest Haven Funeral Chapel (same address).
