Samuel Harrison (Sam) Shaffer of Hagerstown went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Samuel was born in Hagerstown, Md., a son of the late Freida C. (Young) and Samuel Monroe Shaffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class, sailing on the SS Binger Harmon, SS Edward Richardson and the USS John Q. Roberts.
He retired in 1987 as a machinist for Mack Trucks.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936 and United Auto Workers Local 170 in Hagerstown. He also volunteered many years for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Sam was an avid card and board game player with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Connie Ann (Saunders) Shaffer; two daughters, Patricia A. Greathead and husband, Ben, and Carolyn A. Hull and husband, Joe; three sons Jerry T. Shaffer and wife, Peggy, Samuel G. Shaffer, and James S. Shaffer and wife, Cindy, all of Hagerstown; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and an extended family member, Martha Godlove.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor David Blontz officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour before services at the funeral home
