Susan R. McCarney

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Susan R. McCarney of Smithsburg. Susan departed this life and went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the home of her sister and fiancé surrounded by her family. A devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Susan was born on July 18, 1954, in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years Leonard â??Lennieâ? McCarney Jr. and daughters, Kelly Benner and husband Mike of Maugansville, Erin Gay and husband Justin of Martinsburg, Kerri McCarney of Smithsburg as well as granddaughter, Hannah Cole Benner. Susan is also survived by her parents Russell E., Sr. and Margaret â??Sisâ? (Lushbaugh) Richards
She was preceded in death by her natural father, Mark S. â??Buckâ? Brezler Sr., in 2008.
In addition to her parents she is survived by brothers, Mark Brezler Jr. and wife Judy, Ronald Brezler and wife Cindy, Brian Brezler and wife Colleen, Russell Richards Jr. and wife Tammy and Kevin Richards and fiancé Celena McNairn, all of Hagerstown, Stephen Brezler and wife Lisa of Salisbury, Md.; and her only sister, Trisha Calandrelle and fiancé Bob Daniels of Martinsburg, stepsister, Linda Wilhide and husband John of Pasadena, Calif.; she also leaves behind 20 nieces and nephews who love her dearly.
Susan was a 1972 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. She was previously employed by Weis Markets, Food Land and retired from the Washington County Health Department. Following her retirement, Susan enjoyed house cleaning and providing assistance to her many elderly friends and neighbors, who could no longer do so for themselves. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg and was a current member of the Ringold Church of Christ.
Susan will be forever remembered for her courage and faith and for her loving devotion to her mother and family throughout her life.
At her request, there will be no viewing. A private inurnment ceremony will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery at a later date.
A Celebration of Life officiated by Pastor Richard Daughtridge and Pastor Don Conley will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the Panhandle, 1516 Winchester Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25405.
