Verden Leroy Carpenter

Verden "Leroy" Carpenter, 81, of Hagerstown, MD, formerly of Chesapeake VA, died on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Leroy was born on September 27, 1935, in Clear Spring, MD where he was the 5th of 13 children. He was the son of the late Frank Milton and Ruth Naomi (Gruber) Carpenter. In addition to his parents, Leroy is preceded in death by three brothers, Conrad F. Carpenter, James B. Carpenter, and Phillip M. Carpenter; a daughter Barbara Jo Call, and a granddaughter Angela Miller.
Leroy was a 1954 graduate from Clear Spring High School.
Leroy, or "Joe" as he was known in the service, retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1974 after 20 years.
Leroy was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., D.A.V., and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Leroy is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Dolores Carpenter; 4 brothers, William "Bill" Carpenter and wife Doris, Robert A. "Bob" Carpenter and wife Linda, Frank M. Carpenter, and John Carpenter; 5 sisters, Flora M. "Peg" Holland, Nancy L. Zimmerman, Sally R. Shepley, Elizabeth "Sugar" Ross and Amy "Cookie" Snyder; 1 grandchild, Harmoni Wagner; and 7 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Inc. in Hagerstown, MD, with Pastor Mark Sandell officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Hagerstown, MD.
Friends and family will be received at the funeral home from 6-8pm Monday, July 17, 2017.
