Vernon Leon Tetlow

Vernon Leon Tetlow, of Hagerstown, Md., died peacefully Oct. 1, 2011, at his home residence with his family by his side after a long and wonderful life of 81 years.

Born May 25, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late John Tetlow and Katherine Brooks Smith-Tetlow.

He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, with a rank of 2nd class petty officer, and is a veteran of the Korean War.

Vernon received a BSCE from Drexel University in 1959. He then went on to become the past president of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, as well as the past president of the Western Maryland Chapter of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. His professional career also included being vice president of The Blake Co. from 1972 to 1985 and the president of Tetlow Construction Co. from 1985 through his retirement in 1996.

In 1950, Vernon pitched a â??perfect gameâ? in the City League of Philadelphia and was later that year signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although he was drafted by the Pirates, his true love of baseball was the Philadelphia Phillies.

Vernon was an avid golfer and a member of the Fountain Head Country Club, where he served on the board of governors from 1978 to 1984.

Other community involvement includes serving on the board of directors for Hospice of Washington County and a past member of Hagerstown Rotary Club.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Pamela Tetlow; daughters, Trish (Kinter) Wilburn and spouse, James Wilburn, of Hagerstown, JoAnne Tetlow of Annapolis, Nichole Cordell of Hagerstown, and Beth Hull and spouse, Jeff Hull, of Mercersburg; grandchildren, Meghan Cordell of Hagerstown, Ryan Kinter of Hagerstown, Ava Hull of Mercersburg, Rachel Hull of Mercersburg and Bailey Hull of Mercersburg; sisters, Janet Moyer and spouse, Richard Moyer, of Newark Del., and Hope T. Day and spouse, Norman Day, of Philadelphia; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sister, Millicent Taylor.

There will be a gathering of friends at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial services will be held at St. Annâ??s Catholic Church, Hagerstown, on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Collin Poston officiating. Graveside services will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

A luncheon for family and friends will be held at Fountain Head Country Club following the memorial services.
