Walter R. Hollingsworth

January 2, 1924 — February 3, 2015

Walter R. Hollingsworth (Richard) age 91, formally of 21441 Leiter St., Hagerstown, Md., died, February 3rd, 2015. Born January 2, 1924 near Leitersburg, Washington County, Maryland. He was the eldest son of the late Sheridan (Dick) W. Hollingsworth and Mary Edna (Newcomer) Hollingsworth.

He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church of Leitersburg, Md. and served on church council and numerous committees through the years, he also served as Choir Director from 1954 to 1994.

He was a member of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Company from 1957 to 1972 and served as Secretary and and Fire Police for many of those years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

During World War II he served as a tail gunner aboard a B-24 bomber in the U.S.Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 in the European Theater of Operations with the 15th Air Force stationed in Italy. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart for his injuries suffered after being shot while on his 5th bombing mission over Germany.

He worked for Potomac Edison for 38 years retiring in 1984 and was a member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners. After retiring he devoted much of his time to his favorite hobbies of auto restoration and painting cars.

In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Janet Alice (Rodgers) Hollingsworth who passed away on August 11th, 2007 and eldest son Dwight W. Hollingsworth who passed away on December 25th, 2009.

He is survived by his brother Gene Hollingsworth of Round Hill, Va., Sons, Gary L. Hollingsworth and wife Jen of Smithsburg, Md., Keith R. Hollingsworth of Hagerstown, Md., Terry L. Hollingsworth and wife Mary Lou of Waynesboro, Pa. and Brian D. Hollingsworth and wife Glenda of Hagerstown, Md., also numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church, Leitersburg, Md. with Pastor Terry Culler officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded by the Maryland National Guard Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave. Hagerstown on Friday from 7-9 P.M. and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
