William Allen Penner

William Allen "Joe" Penner, 96, of Hagerstown, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center.

Born January 22, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Paul Calvin and Hazel Irene (Poffenberger) Penner.

He was an employee of the M.P. Moller Organ Company, in Hagerstown, retiring in 1985 after working 49 years. He continued as a consultant until 1992 with the closing of the company.

He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant with the Corps of Engineers. He was a past president of the Southern Engineering Society, in Hagerstown.

He was a member of the Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42. Joe was interested in genealogy and was a member of several Genealogy Organizations. He was a life member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown where he served in numerous capacities, including the church council, superintendent of the Sunday school and teacher of a young Men's Class.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Violet Agatha (Turner) Penner, whom he married September 24, 1949; two sisters, Ruth Rebecca Fleagle of Frederick, Md. and Margaret Jane Brewbaker of Rockville; one brother, Nevin Clay Penner of Hagerstown and Godson, John A. Schaffer, II, of Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 1:00pm at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with the Rev. Linda M. Alessandri officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 6-8pm.
