William Charles Chatkin

William Charles Chatkin, 80, of Hagerstown, Md., died at Meritus Medical Center May 23, 2012.

Born in Hagerstown on Feb. 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Robert H. and Evelyn L. Chatkin. He was of the Jewish faith.

He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1950, Dickinson College in 1954 and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1957.

He operated Chatkinâ??s Pharmacy with his father until 1962. He owned and operated Chatkinâ??s West-End Pharmacy until 1981. From 1981 to 1995, he was a pharmacist at Pattersonâ??s Drug Store in Martinsburg, W.Va. When he retired in 2002, he was a staff pharmacist at CVS. He worked the past eight years at Hagerstown Treatment Service.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley A. Chatkin.

He was a member and past president of the Hagerstown Exchange Club, past president of the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society, past member of the Washington County Pharmaceutical Association, and served one term on the Executive Committee of the Maryland Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of Elkâ??s Lodge 378, AARP, and the Hagerstown Hanger of the Quiet Birdmen.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothea Chatkin; a son, Aaron Chatkin and wife, Dawn, of Gastonia, N.C.; a daughter, Elizabeth Scallion and husband, Matt, of Maugansville, Md., and four grandchildren, Sarah Eby and Natalie, Keri and Jake Scallion, also of Maugansville.

Arrangements are being handled by Rest Haven Funeral Chapel.

A funeral service will be held Friday, May 25, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mark C Mooney officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
