William Cullen Barr

William Cullen Barr, 93, of Charlotte Hall, MD, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Born April 19, 1919, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William Cullen, Jr. and Maude A. (Munson) Barr.

William was a 1937 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He went on to attend Hagerstown Junior College, Nat'l Academy of Vocal Arts in New York as well as the University of Baltimore and Loyola as a business major.

Mr. Barr was a veteran of the United States Navy. While in the Seabees, he was a soloist with the Base Dance band, recording for Armed Forces Radio Services for transmission overseas. Prior to enlistment, Mr. Barr was a professional soloist with church choirs in Hagerstown. From 1954-1960, he was associated with the Potomac Playmakers Little Theater Group as an actor and then six years as a director. After moving to Baltimore, he became a soloist in the choir of the Second Presbyterian Church. He was an avid oil painter and golfer.

William was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis Carty Barr, who died August 14, 2001.

Surviving him is a daughter, Deborah Barr Hood and her husband R. Bruce Hood of Timonium, MD and a granddaughter, Lindsay Erin Hood of Stamford Ct.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 3, 2013 in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, with Father Limmer officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Maryland State Honor Guard.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1108 Providence Road, Towson, MD 21286. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Heritage Fund.
