William Elgin

June 12, 1925 — December 2, 2014

William Edward "Bill" Elgin, 89, of Waynesboro, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Falling Springs Nursing Home in Chambersburg, PA.

Born June 12, 1925 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Edward Fisk and Mary (Cline) Elgin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph F. Elgin; a granddaughter, Erin Swisher Youngbar; and a grandson, Matthew J. Elgin.

Married for 69 years, he was a faithful and wonderful husband of J. Rebecca "Becky" (Bowers) Elgin, his high school sweetheart.

Bill was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School, serving as senior class president. He joined the Navy during World War II, was assigned by the Navy to Stevens Institute of Technology, graduated in 1946 with a degree in mechanical engineering, and was commissioned as an active duty officer.

After his military service, he worked for the Potomac Edison Company for 23 years. In 1970, he accepted a position with the Navy Department as a power consultant on the island of Guam. While serving in that capacity, he received a commendation from the governor of Guam for his outstanding performance as well as a meritorious service award from the U.S. Navy.

While in Guam he and his wife were able to enjoy traveling in the Orient. In 1977, Bill and Becky returned to the states, settling in Northern Virginia, where Bill worked for the Department of Navy until he retired in 1987.

Moving to Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Bill attended Otterbein Church where he served as an elder and Sunday School teacher, and was very involved in the church's Biblical Counseling Ministry. He was also an active supporter of Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of southern Pennsylvania.

Bill was a loving and caring father of four children - William J. Elgin and wife Carolyn, Daniel E. Elgin and wife Bonnie, Nancy L. Churchill Souders and husband Foster, and Peggy A. Swisher and husband Jim. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Otterbein Church, 912 S. Potomac St, Waynesboro, PA., with the Rev. Michael Newman officiating. Following the service, there will be an opportunity to visit with the family.
