Asta Smith

Asta (Lohne) Smith, 94, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Somerford Place in Hagerstown.

She was born on September 12, 1928, in Bergen, Norway, daughter to Frithjof and Pauline (Horsøy) Lohne.  Asta grew up with seven close siblings, Frøydis, Per, Martha, Gunnvor, Steffen, Frithjof and Bjørn, in a loving family on the small island Horsøy, just outside of Bergen. She studied for four years at Onsrud Mission School. Being adventurous, she then travelled to England, and later to the U.S. where she married Larry Smith. They initially lived in Washington DC, with Larry´s beloved granddaughter Tina, and later moved to Hagerstown.

Asta was a dedicated member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, contributing greatly both socially and in terms of volunteer work. As a professional, she was an administrator and worked for many years at the Adventist Review in Hagerstown.

Although she lived in the US for most of her adult life, Asta never lost connection with her family in Norway. She often travelled back to Norway and continued to speak flawless Norwegian and enjoyed Norwegian arts and crafts. She was also a gifted painter. Asta created a beautiful home with her husband and was a natural hostess for family and friends.

She continued to live in her house in Hagerstown after the loss of her dear husband. The last few years of her life, she has stayed at Somerford Place in Hagerstown, where she received wonderful care.

Asta is survived by five siblings, Frøydis, Per, Martha, Gunnvor, and Steffen, her granddaughter Tina and her three children, and her devoted friend Charlotte.

Memorial service will take place at Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church Footer Logo. 11507 Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740 on July 22 at 4 pm.
