Charity Koback Sweeney

Charity Koback Sweeney fell asleep in the Lord on January 13, 2023, at the age of 95. 

She had loved her children, Cheryl, Geoffrey, and Kevin and their spouses, Michael, Pia, and Olha with all of her heart. She cherished her grandchildren, Kate and Jake. Charity also was devoted to her Ukrainian Catholic Faith, imbued in her by her mother, Juliana, in Shamokin, PA. She had seven brothers and sisters whom all attended Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church.

After High School in Shamokin, she helped the war effort in the Navy Department in DC where she married Herman Edward Sweeney. She obtained a BA in pre-med and English at Stephen F. Austin in TX, and eventually moved to Hagerstown where she taught 8th grade English at Northern Middle and taught 19th Century Russian Literature in Translation at Hagerstown Community College. She loved hiking the Appalachian trail and oil painting.

Charity joined the Frederick Discalced Carmelites third order, a group which eventually formed in Hagerstown under Bill and Kitty Hudson as Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Discalced Carmelites, where she served on the council and taught formation classes. Charity was an adorer for St. Mary' s and hosted two prayer groups in her home.

Charity has treasured her faith, family, and many close friends.

On Thursday, January 19, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, a Rosary will be said at 9:00 A.M. with Requiem Mass at 10:00 A.M followed by procession to Rest Haven Cemetery for burial.

A Byzantine Rite Requiem will be held on Saturday, January 21, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Ann R. Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown.
