Crete Tipton Ottinger, a resident of Homewood at Williamsport, died on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at the age of 104.
Born in Iowa on May 10, 1915, Crete was the daughter of the late Olonzo and Lena (Warner) Tipton.
She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Ottinger, her sister Merna Wogen, and her brother Gordon Tipton.
After graduating from high school in Baxter, Iowa, Crete moved to Chicago where she completed nursing school in 1936 at Michael Reese Hospital.
She also attended the University of Iowa School of Public Health. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Michael Reese Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Colton Villa Nursing Home, and as a private duty nurse. She had resided in the Hagerstown area since 1948. While raising her family she was a homemaker, and volunteered in a number of capacities with the Girl Scouts. She also served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, County United Way, Womens Club of Hagerstown, and as an elementary school reading tutor.
She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing for her family and in later years providing sewn items for charitable causes. She enjoyed word games, especially crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and family genealogy.
Crete is survived by three daughters: Paula and husband Ahmed Bakry of Takoma Park, Maryland; Gail Grove of Chambersburg, Pa; and Janice and husband Brent Chippendale of Bedford, Pa. She is also survived by her grandson Bryan Ottinger and family Ora, Liam, and Luca, her grandson Eric Ottinger and wife Amber, and her granddaughter Rebecca Chippendale. Crete was devoted to her family, and her loving presence will be greatly missed.
A private service will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery.
