Doris Sager

Doris (Stevenson) Sager, 97, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 16, 2019.
Frances Doris Stevenson was born on May 10, 1922 in Waynesboro, PA to the late Wilbur and Roberta Quinn Stevenson. Doris grew up in Washington Township, PA. In 1943, she graduated from Penn State University with a degree in journalism. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Doris was accepted into the United States Navys WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) officers training school. She served as an officer from 1943 to 1946 and was assigned to the Communications Annex in Washington, DC. She officially discharged in 1951 as Lieutenant, W, C2, USNR.
In July 1946, Doris married Thomas Curtis Sager. In 1950, they moved to Hagerstown, MD. She was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church and put in many hours serving on the PTA, YMCA swim team, Little League, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Doris was a life-time member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O. Sisterhood), and served as past presidents of both organizations. She also served as a board member of the Red Cross Chapter, the Maryland Theater, the Sister Cities Affiliation, and the Hagerstown Womens Club. In 2017, Doris was honored as a "Golden Girl" by the Maryland State chapter of P.E.O for 50 years of membership. Doris worked as a social worker for Washington Countys Department of Social Services for the State of Maryland. After retirement, Doris and Tom traveled the world extensively.
Doris spent several years at the Somerford Memory Care unit in Hagerstown, MD prior to moving in with her daughter Marty and late husband, Rev. Stewart Crank, in Burlington, NC. She attended Bethel United Methodist (Burlington) and Camp Springs United Methodist (Caswell County) churches where her son-in-law served as pastor. She later attended Front Street United Methodist Church with her family.
Doris is survived by children, Susan Quinn (Sager) Mason of Alexandria, VA, Martha (Marty) Louise (Sager) Crank of Burlington, NC, and former three-term Mayor of Hagerstown, MD, Steven Thomas Sager of Halethorpe, MD; brother, Harlan Quinn Stevenson and sister-in-law, Catherine (Kitty) Stevenson of Bethany, CT; grandchildren, Brian Mason, Curtis Mason, David Crank and wife Rebecca Crank, Laura (Crank) Moore and husband Daryl Moore, Becky Sager, and Lizzie (Sager) Dattilio and husband Patrick Datillio; three step grandchildren, Melinda Crank Stephens, Jennifer Crank Potts, Stewart Allen Crank, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, and eight step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, Wilbur and Roberta Quinn Stevenson; husband, Thomas Curtis Sager; son-in-law Rev. Stewart Allen Crank Sr.; grandson, Beau Stevenson Mason, and great-granddaughter, Olivia Quinn Moore.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The family will receive friends from 12-1pm. Following the burial, the family will receive friends in the funeral home for fellowship and refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimers Foundation of America or to any membership with which Doris was affiliated.
