Ernesto Sevilla Aragon, 92 of Hagerstown, Maryland passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 19, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Manila and was the son of the late Estanislao Aragon and Sebastiana Sevilla Aragon. He had a degree in Civil Engineering and worked for Proctor and Gamble Philippine Manufacturing Company. He retired from P & G PMC in 1983 to immigrate to the United States with his family. In the US, he first settled in New Jersey, then had a second home in Washington, DC and upon retirement moved to Hagerstown, Maryland in 1997.
In New Jersey, he worked the night shift plant supervision at BASF and then at Firminich, and would drive weekly back to Washington, DC. Ernie loved Washington’s historic architecture and tree lined streets and loved taking visitors around the nation’s capital. He did not miss many of the yearly 4th of July fireworks and annual blooming of the Cherry Blossoms. Upon retiring to Hagerstown, he moved his family to a restored Victorian home in the old part of town. But he also wanted to experience country living. He moved to an 1850’s farmhouse with sprawling land and views of the mountains, planted fruit trees and dreamt of restoring the chicken house and the original tenant house. He loved working in the grounds, using his riding lawn mower and doing home repairs. He was the quintessential engineer, who loved problem solving, and fixing and improving everything.
Ernie lived a full life. He had amazing energy, a zest for living, and a love for the simple things in life. A lifelong learner, he had many hobbies and interests. Ernie had a ready smile and a capacity for much joy. He was truly young at heart.
He is survived by his loving wife Justina Sazon, son Victor Sebastian Aragon, daughters, Maria Andrea Aragon, Pia Aragon Sweeney (Bruce Utterback), Maria Isabel Aragon and Lydia Lavendia. He adored his three grandchildren Jacob Geoffrey Sweeney, Elias Sebastian Aragon and Lyra Abigail Aragon. He is also survived by one brother Antonio Aragon of Manila, Philippines and two sisters, Thelma Zalamea of Los Angeles, California and Leticia Domingo, of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mr. Aragon attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and for many years was a regular at the adoration chapel.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday October 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at Rest Haven Funeral home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Rev. Father Collin Poston officiating. The final resting place of his ashes will be at the Lourdes Columbarium at the Mt. Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
