Eugene Horton, Jr.

Eugene Edward Horton, Jr., 76, of Hagerstown, passed away, Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Thursday, March 10th, 1949 in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC to his parents of Eugene and Virginia Horton.

He is the 4th of seven siblings: Marlene, Glenda, Rose, Gene, Cathy, David, and Michael.

Growing up he was called “Junior” until his teenage years one day he decided he wanted to be called Gene. Gene is the oldest of the boys, his siblings looked up to him, he was very caring and protective of them.

He attended North Carolina Meck Schools and In 1967 he graduated from Douglas High in Baltimore Md. After graduating, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam war. Later, he earned his Bachelor's in Business from the University of Baltimore.

He always enjoyed working; He met the love of his life, his wife Gladys on their second job. After dating, They married on June 29th,1974. God blessed their union for 51 years. They had 5 children: Leonard, Aaron, Thomas, Priscilla, and Steven.

Eugene enjoyed watching his children grow up. He was a wonderful and loving father and husband.

Gene and Gladys moved from Baltimore to Hagerstown MD, to be closer to their place of worship, The Church of God and Saints of Christ. Prophet Crowdy, “said to run as though you have 10 minutes”; So St. Eugene rapidly studied to receive his sabbath school diploma in less than a year. Afterwards Chief Evag Roy Guy appointed him the Superintendent of the Sabbath School and Rabbi where he served for over 35 years in both positions. Later Bishop Stallings, ordained him Elder and appointed him Pastor of Waynesboro Pa tabernacle. A few years later,Bishop Hendricks elevated him as the Counselor of the church.

A celebration of Life service will be conducted on Sunday, November, 9, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at Impact Ministries, 119763 Long Meadow Rd., Hagerstown.

Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.

A repast will be held following the burial at Impact Ministries.

Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.
