Helena Lee Niswander

Helena Lee Niswander (Miller) passed away on February 29th, 2024 at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD. Helena was a kind soul, a sweet person who helped others, and a strong woman. She was known for being a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, and a friend to all.

Helena is survived by her daughter Katie Sisler and husband Brandon Sisler, as well as her twin daughters Sarah Hart and Stephanie Hart, sister Debbie E. Hafer and brother, Larry Miller.  She was also a mother to Malachi Younger, Joseph Middleton, and Uriah Land. Helena was a grandmother to 16 children, as well as a great-grandmother, with one to arrive in September. She was affectionately known as “Gah”.

Helena was preceded in death by her daughter Brooke Nicole McNamee, her mother Betty Lee Miller, her father John Miller, Sr., her husband John Edward Niswander, and her brother John Donald Miller Jr.

Helena worked as a cook and food service worker throughout her career and truly touched the lives of all who met her along the way. She worked at Fountain Head Country Club, The Salvation Army (Midday Manna), and Amvets Post 10 of Hagerstown, MD.

Helena enjoyed fishing, going to the beach, and had a strong passion for cooking. But, most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

She worshipped at The Salvation Army where she also introduced the Lord to all her children and grandchildren.

Major Donald Wilson will be officiating the memorial service on Saturday, March 9, 2024 that will be held at The Salvation Army, 525 George Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740. All friends and family are welcome to gather at 11 a.m. prior to the service beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m.

As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Salvation Army (address listed above).

Helena will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of kindness, selflessness, and love will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
