Howard Upton "Poppy" Baker, Jr.

Howard Upton "Poppy" Baker, Jr., 71, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away, Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born June 3, 1954 in Bethesda, Md., he was the son of the late, Howard Upton Baker, Sr. and Hazel (Hurst) Baker. In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Baker.

Howard grew up in Darnestown, Md. and was a 1972 graduate of Gaithersburg High School.

After graduation Howard worked for his father who owned H.U. Baker Co., a custom home builder.

Howard retired as a Plant Equipment Operator for the Montgomery County Public School System after 22 years of service.

Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many annual trips to Oakland, Md., and Spotsylvania, Va. to deer and turkey hunt with his son, close friends and family.

He was also known for the love of his prized 1976 Corvette.

Howard will always be remembered for his great smile, his generous heart and the great love and dedication to his family.

He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, Hagerstown.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Cynthia Diane (Kearns) Baker; one son, Michael A. Baker; one granddaughter, Aubrey M. Baker; one brother, Charles Andrew Baker and wife, Carol; two sisters, Bonnie Lee Kessell and husband, Danny and Connie Sue Bashop and husband Ronnie and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Nancy Hardy and husband, Michael.

A memorial service will be conducted at Mountain View Baptist Church, 12107 Walnut Point Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740 on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 11:00 A.M.
