James Houston Hilton

June 26, 1934 — May 26, 2020

James Houston Hilton, 85, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully and into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 26, 2020.

Born on June 26, 1934, at Washington County Hospital, he was the son of the late James Houston and Virgie Redwine Hilton, and was a 1952 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

Jim was a multi-sport athlete, but his true passion was baseball. He could be found on the Pitcher’s Mound throwing Southpaw for Hagerstown High School, the American Legion, and in the Independent League for teams like Chewsville and Halfway. Jim was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals and was so humbled by the experience that he became a lifelong Cardinals fan.

Jim attended Hagerstown Junior College and was an Engineering Draftsman by trade. He worked for Landis Machine Tool Company, Pangborn Corporation, Danzer Metal, Horn Corporation, and Hub Labels.

Jim served his community and the Church for many years. With the Hagerstown Jaycees, he was a requested mentor, Basketball Coach, former External Vice President, and left the organization as an Exhausted Rooster. With the Maugansville Ruritan Club, he could be found selling Christmas Trees to raise money for local needs and achieved 30 years of Perfect Attendance. With the Federal and Maugansville Little Leagues, he could be found Umpiring the bases or calling balls and strikes from behind home plate for over 20 years. With the First Baptist Church, he served as an Usher and Deacon and is where he met his wife of 58 years, Doris Holsinger Hilton. With Paramount Chapel and then Paramount Baptist Church, he served as an Usher and Trustee and could be found trimming bushes or making repairs.

Along with his loving wife Doris, Jim is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Ty Haden, son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Joi Hilton, four grandchildren, Adam and Aaron Haden, Lily and Henry Hilton, and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his brother Emmett, and sisters Mary Wittmer, Julie Bearinger, Gertude Gross, Evelyn Hilton, Letha Keesling, and Ann Orfield.

A private viewing and graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family with Pastor Josh Fields officiating. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either the Maugansville Ruritan Club or Paramount Baptist Church.
