Janet Susan Custer

Janet Susan Custer, 84, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Sterling Care South Mountain, Boonsboro MD.

Born on August 13, 1938, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of Henry Samuel Walters and Cora Mae (Barnhart) Walters.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Patricia (Pat) Eichelberger, Margaret (Peg) Hawbaker, and Helen Bowers; 2 brothers, William (Bill) Walters and Gary Walters; and one grandson.

She retired from Rust-Oleum with 25 years of service and previous employment included retail sales associate, waitress at several local diners and a crossing guard for Washington County Public Schools.

She enjoyed bowling, dancing, camping, listening to country music and multiple crafts.  With her creative talent, she has gifted so many keepsakes to her family and friends, such as ceramics, afghan blankets, embroidered items and her most famous rabbits with outfits.  The best gift of all that she gave to her family is generations of many more apples that don’t fall to far from the tree (one of her favorite quotes).  Most of her years, she attended the Evangelical Bible Center.  She also attended several other houses of worship as she made her homes throughout Hagerstown and Williamsport, MD.

She is survived by her six children, Robert (Joe) Burger, wife Susie, Donna (Burger) Hutzell, husband Phil, Debra (Burger) Shank, husband Elmer, Dena (Burger) Wright, husband Larry, Gregory Custer, wife Stacy and Douglas Custer, wife Lee Ann, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, with two more due to arrive, one in December 2022 and one in February 2023 and her special friend and companion, James (Buddy) Minnick. She is also survived by 2 Sisters; Martha "Kit" Gehr and Carole Martin, and 3 Brothers; Henry "Charlie" Walters, James "Jim" Walters and Robert "Bobby" Walters.

She will be missed so much by her family and friends, especially her strong and compassionate hugs, but know she will continue to embrace us all from above.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Pastor Robert V. Robinson officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Family and friends will be received on Friday at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s National Hospital Foundation, Attn: Gift Administration, 1 Inventa Place, 6th Floor, Silver Spring, MD 20910, or any charity of your choice.
