John A. Sullivan Sr.

John L. Sullivan, Sr., 97, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on January 25, 2024, at Seaton of Hagerstown. He was the husband of the late Ethel Jean (Anderson) Sullivan.

Born on October 1, 1926, in Hagerstown, MD.  He was the son of the late Charles Wilbur Sullivan and Margaret (Keller) Sullivan.
John has worked in several places in his lifetime.   Hagerstown Shoe Factory, Mollers, Superior Dairy, Sullivan’s Grocery Store (owner), House painting, and Captain at  MCTC.  He was a hard worker and often worked several jobs to take care of his beloved family.  He also was ready and able to lend a hand to those that needed help in any way he could. When working at Mollers he made airplane parts out of wood.  He said it was the best job he ever had.  That must have started his love for
woodworking as a hobby.  Also loved fishing, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and playing the slot machines.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in The Philippines.
John is survived by his sister, Laverna Page;  sister-in-law, Sonia Sullivan; brother-in-law, Stanley Anderson; children, daughter Sharon A. Griffith and husband Ray (Tony) Griffith, daughter, Krista L. Evans; and son, John L. Sullivan, Jr.; 4 grandchildren, Stacy Bowles, Dustin Dixon, Sarah Evans and husband Paul Wetzstein, and Brian Evans; as well as 5 great-grandchildren, Jasmine Macker, Nicholas Macker, Isabelle Macker, Gabriella Oley, Miles Wetzstein and one due to arrive very soon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Jean; father Charles Wilbur Sullivan; mother Margaret Sullivan; brothers Lawrence (Bill) Sullivan, Charles (Pap) Sullivan, and Robert (Bob) Sullivan; sister Hilda (Adams) Sullivan; one daughter, Cindy Jean Dixon; one son-in-law, Dale Dixon;  two grandchildren, Jill Renee Griffith and Cassie Dixon Oley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 11 am at Rest Haven.  Pastor Teresa Adams, who is the wife of John’s nephew, Kelly Adams, will be delivering a brief message.
