Maureen Yvonne Hann

Maureen Yvonne (Martin) Hann, 92, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away peacefully at Fahrney-Keedy Memory Care on Wednesday evening, July 16, 2025, after a fifteen-year journey with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by the loving embrace of her family, while her daughter, Colleen, held her hand.

She was born in Hagerstown on August 23, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Beulah (Ford) Martin, and step-father, Richard M. Kauffman Sr.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1950, where she served as secretary of the Future Retailers of Hagerstown and danced in the Dancing Club, earning a reputation for “cutting a rug.”

She worked at Bonded Applicators in Hagerstown, before joining Gardenhour Roofing in the early 1980s, where she played a pivotal role in helping build the business and managing the company's operations. She retired in the late 1990s.

After retirement, Maureen loved playing cards and hosting card parties at her home on Glenside Avenue. She enjoyed going to lunch with friends and spending time with family. She thoroughly enjoyed reading the newspaper daily and watching television news, staying up-to-date with current events, and engaging in lively debates with her grandson, Ryan, in which she invariably came out on top (even though Ryan wouldn't admit it at the time).

Maureen commanded financial matters brilliantly. She loved watching the stock market and teaching her husband, daughter, and grandson about the virtues of saving money and spending wisely. She loved animals and, for many years, fed Glenside Avenue’s numerous stray cats; she sometimes grumbled about the untold litters of kittens who unfailingly showed up at her front door looking for a meal. Nevertheless, Maureen kept feeding them.

Mrs. Hann, as many fondly remember her, touched countless lives by quietly embodying her values and faith, proving that personal integrity is the most sacred of human bonds. She lived fearlessly and independently, always remaining cool under pressure. She stood up for other people and lived her life with kindness, empathy, and compassion. Her most precious love was her family, whom she often reminded that she would haunt in the afterlife if certain preconditions went unmet. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Halfway.

Maureen was preceded in death by her dearly beloved husband of sixty-nine years, Carroll Richard Hann, who passed away on December 22, 2020, and one brother, Arlington A. Martin (Joan Martin).

She is survived by her loving daughter, Colleen M. Bowers, and her husband, E. Leon Bowers, of Hagerstown; her adoring grandson, Ryan R. Miner, and his spouse, Kimberly, of Gaithersburg; two great-grandchildren, Joshua & Paige; and one particularly sassy cat, Sidney.

The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home601 Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, which coincidentally marks her late husband's 100th birthday.

Maureen was a beautiful person who will be dearly missed by so many. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Beverly Bowers, her son-in-law’s mother, Kathy Brenneman, and Karen Lydig, who lovingly and tenderly assisted Maureen during her journey with Alzheimer’s.

Memorial donations may be made in Maureen's name to the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740, or the Alzheimer's Association - Greater Maryland Chapter.
