Michael James Jones, aged 81, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at University of Maryland Medical Center. Born on February 25, 1944, in Greenville, SC, Michael was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and cherished member of the community.
Michael dedicated his life to serving others. He served in the US Navy from 1963-1968 & was a Veteran of the Vietnam war. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology. He joined the Montgomery County Police Department in October 1968. Shortly thereafter, he made the rank of detective and served in the Youth Division. He retired in August of 1991. From there, he was a Security Cluster Coordinator for Montgomery County Public Schools for over 25 years.
He officially retired in 2017. He filled his free time with hunting, fishing, gardening, and his favorite Trap Shooting. He was a member of Tuscarora Gun Club & Waynesboro Fish & Game Association. Many mornings or late at night, you would find him in the kitchen making food to share with others.
He loved making Banana Bread, Lemon Meringue Pie, & his beloved citrus pound cake. When questioned about his recipes, he would laugh & always reply “I can’t tell you that. It’s an oooolllddd Chinese secret”. Of late, he enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies to share. However, he would always give a warm one to whoever was in the house, and leave behind a cookie each for Max, Dell, Boo, Rosebud, & Button. While it’s impossible to list all of the lives he’s touched, Michael left a lasting impression on all who knew him, creating a legacy characterized by compassion, humor, and a strong work ethic.
