Nancy Jane Devault

Nancy Jane DeVault, 93, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Saturday, February 17th, 2024, at Hospice of Hagerstown, Doey’s House. Born April 16, 1930, in Scranton, PA, Nancy was the daughter of the late Milford W. Pope and the late Harriet (Lance) Pope.

 She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Ray E. DeVault. 

Nancy moved from Scranton, PA to Hagerstown in 1939. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1948. In her Junior year of High School, Nancy was signed as a soloist for the Waynesboro area band, Zel Smith and his Orchestra. From the time she was a freshman in High School Nancy enjoyed her own 15-minute radio program, Monday evenings at 9:15pm on WJEJ. After singing with Zel Smith’s Orchestra Nancy continued as a vocalist with The Stylists, a local jazz combo, which included her future husband ‘Bill’ on drums. You could also find Nancy behind the ticket doors at Franklin Court Auditorium, on Franklin Street in Hagerstown, volunteering, selling tickets to record hops in the late 50’s. Nancy loved the game of golf. She and her family were charter members at Beaver Creek Country Club and later, Waynesboro Country Club. Many wonderful summers were spent enjoying rounds of golf with friends at Beaver Creek Country Club. Nancy finished at the top in many tournaments at Beaver Creek in the low gross and low net divisions. In 1965, Nancy was awarded the most improved golfer according to Golf Digest Magazine. Nancy worked at the Washington County Clerks office for many years. Nancy attended Salem Reformed Church. 

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Kristin DeVault of Hagerstown, son Dirk DeVault of Hagerstown and son Doug DeVault of Burke, VA. Grandchildren include Jessica, Casey, Erik, and Kari DeVault. Arrangements for final resting are being handled by Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Memorial services and internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Doey’s House, Hospice of Hagerstown.
