Norma Thompson

Norma J. Thompson, 81, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown.

Born on December 11, 1941, in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Grady Knapp and Earnie Geraldine (Barnes) Knapp. She was one of the last of her thirteen siblings, Violet, Geraldine, Ruella, Dorothy, Gladys, Florence, Grady, Richard, Charles, Michael, Louis “Steven”, Patrick, and Glenn. Norma worked in several restaurants over the years and spent several years as a homemaker.

She was the wife of the late William Harrison Purnell and the late Kenneth Thompson and was preceded in death by an infant son Roger.

Norma is survived by her children, Earnie Knapp, Willa Henderson, Wanda Deville, Charlene Purnell and Juanita Purnell; grandchildren, Dewayne, Miranda, Sherry, Melissa, Travis, Crystal and Samantha; three great grandchildren Dylan, Devon and Kylie, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and spouses she was preceded in death by her grandson, Richard “Rick” (2021) and longtime companion, Charles Smoot.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 6-8pm at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11am at Rest Haven Funeral Home Chapel, interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.
