Patricia Carol Martin

Patricia (Pat) Carol Stouffer Martin of Hagerstown, MD, passed from this life into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Doey’s House Hospice in Hagerstown.  Pat was born on Friday, March 14, 1941, to Charles and Goldie Barkdoll Stouffer of Beaver Creek, MD.

After graduating from South Hagerstown High School in 1959, Pat began working at the Kress Box company.  Her other work experiences include bank teller, school secretary, teletypist for the Consumer Products Safety Commission, and rural mail carrier for the USPS.  However, Pat’s calling and life’s work was loving God and serving her loved ones and neighbors.  She was the devoted wife, partner, and caregiver to her husband of 52 years, E. Richard “Dick” Martin, who died in 2014.

Pat is remembered fondly as a devoted letter writer.  She remembered birthdays, anniversaries, and life events with a handwritten note and maintained correspondence with friends all over the U.S.  Pat had a remarkable green thumb.  She and her cousin Shirley Thompson worked together to make her rock garden beautiful.  Pat could make anything grow and often helped others by repotting and generously giving away cuttings and starts.

Pat was a life-long Lutheran, first attending St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Funkstown, MD.  She was a beloved member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg, MD. She was a Sunday School teacher and student, nursery attendant, Bible Study and Prayer Team Member, youth group volunteer, attended Mar-Lu-Ridge Retreats and Maryland Synod Youth Gatherings, organized choir music, and was a hospitality committee participant. She also made time to attend Women’s Aglow.

Pat was a long-time member of 4-H.  She was a 40+ year All-Star and volunteer and helped to lead the Chewsville 4-H club.  She ushered in numerous new All-Stars and was an avid supporter of the Washington County Ag Expo.

Left to continue her life of service are sisters Janet Reese, Jean Weaver (Dennis), daughters, Marilyn Miner (Butch), Michell Berkey (Jonathan), grandchildren Christa and Lyndsey Miner, Joel and Mary Ellen Berkey, aunts Janet Norris, Kathryn Nave, and Maxine Smith, brother-in-law Gary Martin (Rose), sister-in-law Linda Martin, and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

The family of Pat wishes to thank the staff of Meritus Hospital 2 East and Doey’s House Hospice for making her last days comfortable, safe, and peaceful.

Funeral Services are being handled by Rest Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery in Hagerstown, MD.  The service will be Thursday, December 29, at 11 AM. After an optional brief graveside service, family and friends will gather at Trinity in Smithsburg for fellowship and refreshment.  In lieu of flowers, folks are encouraged to make a memorial donation to Trinity Lutheran Church Smithsburg, MD or to MD Cooperative 4-H Extension – Washington County.
