Robert J. Kinney, Jr.

Robert “Bob” J. Kinney, Jr., 93, of Hagerstown, MD, fell asleep in Jesus on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Meritus Medical Center. Family members surrounded him with their love and prayers prior to his passing.

Born August 29, 1930, in Columbus, OH, Bob was the firstborn son of Robert J. Sr., and Edith B. Kinney. His early years were spent alongside his family in various small towns throughout Ohio. After graduating from Mt. Vernon Adventist Academy in 1948, he attended Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) in Berrien Springs, MI to pursue a business degree. While there, he met his wife, Marguerite V. Williams, and they were married on August 19, 1951. Together, they enjoyed over 70 years of marriage, until her death in 2022.

Bob’s professional career began in various capacities for the Seventh-day Adventist Church throughout Michigan and Wisconsin before settling in Maryland in 1958. The majority of his 44-year career was spent at the Review and Herald Publishing Association, where he served as president from 1991 to 1996. In addition, Bob was a faithful member of the Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church in Boonsboro, MD, and served many years as an Elder, Assistant Treasurer, and other capacities, as needed.

The highlight of Bob’s life was his loving family and the time they spent together. His love of travel was evident in the many family trips and adventures he planned—special memories for his family that will be treasured forever. Throughout every element of his life, Bob’s strong, loving Christian example shone through and left a legacy for those who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived in life by his loving children, daughters Jane Baugher (Jerry) of Germantown, MD, Karen Shockey (Leonard) of Hagerstown, MD, his son Jim Kinney of Greencastle, PA, and his grandsons Brian Shockey of Middletown, CT, and Jason Shockey of Rockville MD; all mourn the loss of their dear father and grandfather. His niece, Terri McLaney and nephew Chip Williams and their families also mourn his loss. Bob was preceded in death by his precious wife, “Margie” Kinney, and his brother David Kinney.

Friends will be received at Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church at 10:30 a.m. with the memorial service following at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2024, with Pastor Shawn Paris and Pastor Lou Alfalah. officiating.

A private family graveside service will follow.
