Timothy D. McCartney Sr.

Timothy D. McCartney Sr., 65, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland. Born on November 7, 1960, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, he was the son of James D. McCartney and Mary A. (Clark) Leatherman, and the stepson of the late Carroll F. Leatherman and Carolyn McCartney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert D. McCartney Sr. and Naillie Leota (Stonbraker) McCartney, and Cleo O. and Mildred Irene (Dannen) Clark.

A proud graduate of Boonsboro High School, Timothy distinguished himself as Valedictorian of the Class of 1978, leaving an indelible mark not only through his academic excellence but also as a cherished member of the track and basketball teams. He carried that same spirit of determination into his long career in the truck driving field, working for over 42 years, mostly with General Electric on Shawley Drive in Hagerstown.

Timothy was a lifelong sports enthusiast. He was a supporter of the Washington Commanders and especially enjoyed college sports, proudly cheering on the Alabama Roll Tide. He found joy in the camaraderie of women’s softball and basketball and held fond memories of watching the Little League World Series. His humor shined during the holiday season, as he loved declaring Die Hard his favorite Christmas movie—a testament to both his wit and his appreciation for a good story.

In his free time, Timothy embraced the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, savoring the beauty of nature whenever he could. Also, an avid reader, often immersed in the thrilling works of Tom Clancy and other techno-thriller authors.

Timothy was known for his gentle kindness. He often carried a bag of peanuts to feed the squirrels. His love for animals was especially evident in his devotion to his Dachshunds—Jordon, Whiskey, Shag, Tanner, Casey, and Elijah. Though only Elijah remains, Timothy’s heart will forever be linked to the joyful memories shared with each of his beloved companions.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Cathy C. (Sandberg) McCartney; his stepmother, Carolyn McCartney; his children, Amanda McCartney, Christina Willson (Jimmy), and Timothy “TJ” D. McCartney Jr. (Sarah); and his stepdaughter, Shannon Pitsnogle. He was a loving brother to Robert and Kelly McCartney, a proud grandfather to Christian I. McCartney, and great-grandfather to A’ Morah Mae Martinez and Keior David-Robert McCartney.

He also shared a close bond with his nephews Robert McCartney Jr., Jonathon Leatherman, and Christopher Leatherman, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
